Mateves

Hands on, no hand-holding.

In the Mateves Programs, volunteers will teach HIV prevention in local schools and in the community, work on various agriculture and eco-construction projects on site, and be a mentor and friend to street children in our Nafasi Nyingine program. Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to live in homes in the surrounding village, becoming integral members of the OHS family and local village community.

The Mateves site is where OHS begins its home base, and now the work is taking the next step to become a community center to provide a natural space for the betterment of health, education, and human empowerment.  Volunteers will play a direct role in the setup of this center through critical engagement of the question of what it means to be human.  From cooking family dinner with your homestay family, to playing soccer with village kids, to makeshift HIV/AIDS teachings in the marketplace, to the physical construction of the community center, these are the human-to-human connections that allow real, lasting growth to happen.
