The experience
Hands on, no hand-holding.
One Heart Source runs several 8-week and 4-week volunteer programs each year designed to effectively attack the cycle of HIV/AIDS and poverty that is gripping Tanzania. Throughout the experience, volunteers live and work in villages, becoming an integral member of the OHS family and local village community. This year we are offering 3 different program sites in Mateves, Tanga, and Zanzibar. In every site volunteers spread out into the ward to teach HIV prevention in local schools and the community. At each site volunteers will also get involved with some of our core programs, such as work with street children in our Nafasi Nyingine program, experience hands on work in eco-construction and farming, and tutor and mentor at our children's home. We also expect volunteers to completely immerse themselves in Tanzanian culture by learning Swahili and exploring this unique region of East Africa on their weekends off.
During our program, volunteers are expected to be proactive and show initiative and resolve in providing their services. We like to say that your work will be “Hands on, but no hand-holding”. Whether you are endeavoring to de-nail a gnarled piece of wood to fuel a fire, playing soccer with a child who lives life on the streets, or demonstrating how to use a condom to a class of giggling students, you will come to realize one great truth - everything is interconnected. The purpose of our volunteer programs is to help young adults become aware of their ability to directly inspire positive change in the lives of those in need, even through seemingly small actions. We target driven, enthusiastic students and college-age individuals who are looking to be an emissary of the oneness and love that envelops all of humanity.
