Arusha

Musa

Tanzania is made up of 26 administrative regions, one of which is Arusha. The seed for One Heart Source was originally planted in a village within this region called Mateves where we currently have our children’s home and soon plan to build our community center for the surrounding villages. As a result of the addition of home-stays to our volunteer programs, our work reaches out and connects to the greater community of the Arusha region. Volunteers who apply for the Arusha region will be placed in one of three villages in the region, and will work with an international team of volunteers to achieve the goals of our programs. OHS works with the Arusha District Office of Education to determine which schools and communities are most in need of immediate assistance.

The major city of Arusha is sprawling out into the surrounding wards and villages, and the effects are alarming examples of the dangers of “development” in Tanzania. Cinder blocks replace mud, sheet metal replaces thatch, and cell phones and soda bottles are becoming ubiquitous - yet children remain vulnerable to simple, treatable diseases like diarrhea and malaria.  HIV remains prevalent and there is still a heavy shroud of stigma surrounding the entire issue of HIV/AIDS. The goal of the volunteer program in Arusha is to engage this reality from a human, grassroots level and work together with local Tanzanian volunteers and community members to move forward, productively and constructively.
