Nafasi Nyingine

What is the Nafasi Nyingine Project?

‘Nafasi Nyingine’ translates to ‘Another chance’, and strives to provide alternative and sustainable solutions to street kids whose chances were cut short.  The current project is a tri-weekly program to offer a warm meal, mentorship, medical attention, and basic English and life skills education.

The kids we work with range from 9-17 years old.  Some have been living on the streets for 2 years or more.  Beyond the current program, we are currently sponsoring a few of the teens through school, and assisting to reconnect some younger children with existing and viable family relations.

However, from what we have done so far, this is simply not enough when after each session we have to drop the kids back on the street.  We are working with the local social welfare department to increase action.  With your help, we will be able to expand to a rehabilitation center to facilitate kids off the street and back into schools.  More Tanzanian social workers and counselors are needed to focus on street children.

It is not just about providing education, it is not just providing food—it is a lifeline back to a sustainable and productive way to support themselves, to become truly independent.  These kids and teens have the potential to live up to their own dreams of becoming lawyers, pilots, and teachers.
